Catherine (“Katie”) Livonia Sheriff passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at the Copper Ridge Health Center in West Jordan, Utah. The family wishes to thank Copper Ridge Health Center and the leaders and members of the Jordan Oaks Stake 9th Branch of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for their tender care of our beloved aunt.
Katie was born August 5, 1934, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Marvin L. Sheriff and Meredith M. Erickson Sheriff, who preceded her in death. Her only sister, Genevieve Sheriff Janzen, also preceded her in death. She is survived by her loving nephews: Steven Fowler, David (Leo) Fowler, Matthew (Paige) Janzen, Darin (Melinda) Janzen, and Brian (Rebekah) Janzen.
For the first three years of her life, she and her sister grew up in Lynndyl, Utah, while their father worked for the Union Pacific Railroad. In 1938, he was transferred 90 miles south to Milford, Utah, where Katie spent all her childhood and teenage years. Katie recalls great times they had as children, including receiving dolls at Christmas from their parents, using a Brownie camera to take pictures of themselves and friends, and listening to popular music on the juke box at the malt shop and on the radio program “Burgie Music Box” at night. They also liked to play at the train yard—much to their mother’s fright when she found out they crawled underneath freight cars. Katie and Jennie had several good girlfriends in Milford. During their teenage years these friends enjoyed going on picnics, ball games, and dragging Main Street, which they had to do several times as it wasn’t a very long road. Katie’s first job was working at the Firmage Movie Theatre with her sister. Katie would sell tickets at the office box and Jennie worked behind the candy counter. They earned the large sum of $1.50/night.
After graduating from Milford High School in 1952, Katie filled out an application for Mountain Bell to become a telephone operator in Milford—this job became a lifetime career with Mountain Bell, and later AT&T, and provided her a good living. On May 16, 1955, Katie moved from Milford to Salt Lake City to continue her career with Mountain Bell. While in Salt Lake City she roomed in a basement apartment with her sister and one of her Milford girlfriends, Sandra Johnson. A few months later when two other girlfriends (Betty Ferguson and Sally Killam) moved up from Milford the five of them moved into a duplex right behind the State Capitol Building. Katie and Jennie remember with great fondness this time when the five Milford girls were together.
Later, after Jennie’s marriage and divorce, Katie became Jennie’s savior by helping raise her nephews until Jennie’s second marriage. “Aunt Katie” is a very special title amongst Jennie’s sons as she became a second mom not only to Steven and David, but later to Matthew, Darin, and Brian.
Katie loved singing, feeding humming birds, and being with family. Katie and her sister also had a very special bond. They saw each other on a weekly basis and telephoned regularly. Each year Katie would save up her tax return and she and Jennie would go on vacation trips to San Francisco, Seattle, Portland, and other places. They would go to a luxury hotel and see the town.
A viewing will be held at 9:00 am on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at the Vista Funeral Home, 4367 S 500 West, Murray Utah 84123. Thereafter, a family graveside service and interment will be held at the Oak City, Utah, Cemetery. Pallbearers are Steven Fowler, David Fowler, Matthew Janzen, Darin Janzen, and Brian Janzen. Dedication of grave will be by Brian Janzen.
