Douglas Allen Tanner

Douglas Allen Tanner, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away unexpectedly on July 21, 2026, at the age of 77.

Doug was born on June 12, 1949, in Ogden, Utah, to Joseph Allen Tanner and Lola Rae Dewey. He was a proud graduate of Ogden High School where many of his lifelong friendships began.

On April 16, 1970, Doug married the love of his life, Vickie Lynn Thompsen. Together they built an extraordinary life over 55 years of marriage filled with unwavering love, laughter, 22 cruises, countless adventures, and a family that became their greatest pride. Their love story was one that inspired everyone who knew them and there is comfort in knowing they are together again.

Doug's career in construction was nothing short of remarkable. A carpenter by trade with an unmatched work ethic and attention to detail, he worked his way up to superintendent, overseeing major commercial construction projects across the country. From Nordstroms to full shopping malls, Disneyland rides to golf courses, Doug oversaw the construction of projects that will be a lasting legacy of his work. He had an incredible ability to build almost anything and fix just about everything, earning the reputation of being the person everyone called when something needed to be done right.

His work took his family across the country, living in Utah, Tacoma, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, Virginia, New Jersey, Denver, and Temecula California. Doug embraced every move as another opportunity to explore and he developed a lifelong love of travel and seeing the world.

After retiring at the age of 55 Doug wasn't one to sit still. For more than 20 years he delivered auto parts, enjoying the chance to stay active while continuing to do what he loved–helping others. He also made sure the cars of his children and grandchildren were always running their best, never hesitating to lend a hand, diagnose a problem, or spend an afternoon under the hood.

Doug was passionate about hockey and was a devoted New York Rangers fan for decades. More recently, he enthusiastically welcomed Utah's NHL team, the Mammoth, giving him another team to cheer for close to home.

While Doug built incredible structures throughout his life, his greatest legacy is the family he built. After losing Vickie, he treasured the closeness that grew within his family during the final year and a half of his life. Whether attending hockey games, getting matching tattoos, ziplining, off-road dog mushing, cheering from the sidelines at track meets, soccer games, dance concerts or golf courses, or meeting his newest grandchild and exploring Hawaii, he embraced every opportunity to make memories. Those moments became priceless gifts to the family who loved him so deeply.

Doug never met a stranger. He cared deeply for his neighbors and cherished the friendships they shared. His family is especially grateful for the love, kindness, and support they have shown during this difficult time.

Doug is survived by his five children: Todd Tanner; Tami (Mike) Peterson; Chad (Nika) Tanner; Corey (Mari) Tanner; and Taryn (Chris) Lines. He also leaves behind 11 cherished grandchildren, who knew him as a loving grandfather, trusted teacher, and faithful supporter. His legacy lives on in each of them. He is also survived by his brother Greg (Karen) Tanner and their children and grandchildren.

Doug will be remembered for his quiet strength, generous heart, unwavering integrity, quick wit, incredible craftsmanship, and willingness to help anyone in need. To his family, he wasn't just someone who built buildings—he built a lifetime of security, love, and memories. He truly was their superhero.

Though our hearts are broken by his unexpected passing, we find peace in imagining Doug reunited with his beloved Vickie, setting off together on another adventure, cruising through eternity hand in hand.

Please join us in celebrating Doug's life on Tuesday, August 4, 2026, at 8150 S. Grizzly Way, West Jordan, Utah. A memorial service will be held at 6 PM, with a family prayer at 5:30. An open house will be held immediately afterward in the cultural hall for all to gather to share memories and honor Doug.
