J Garth Remington was born on December 13, 1938 in Roosevelt, Utah to Walter Poage Remington and Cleona Larsen Remington. For the first five years of his life, he lived in a two room log cabin in Bluebell, Utah. He loved this snug little home, which his mother kept clean and homey. He also loved running free with his brothers, the expansive views, the flowers and the mountains,
Just before he started school, the family moved three quarters west to the center of the little town to take care of his Grandpa Larsen. He described his grandpa’s farm as a “child’s paradise” with all the animals, the orchard, and the big barn. Here also he found numerous neighborhood friends to play games and enjoy time at each other’s houses.
He attended school at the Bluebell Public School, right across from the church, which served also as a community center for all the holidays and events. The Church was central in his life. He graduated from Altamont High School in May, 1957 and went to work for Gilbert Dairy to earn money for college. In the following years, he worked for the forest service, Flaming Gorge Dam, McDonald’s Candy, and United Airlines, while attending college at both BYU and U of U. He studied a variety of subjects and has always maintained a wide range of interests, as well as a remarkable vocabulary.
Beginning in January of 1959, he served a mission in the Eastern States Mission, working in New York and Pennsylvania. He enjoyed his mission very much. Upon returning, he attended the University of Utah, and it was there, in a university singles ward that he met Claudia Green. They were married on August 15, 1969. They lived for five years in Salt Lake City, eight years in Bluebell, Utah, in Murray for 25 years and in West Jordan for 20 years. Garth was an avid gardener. He loved all growing things. In his 50’s, he learned to play the organ and was the assistant ward organist.
Through the years, he served in many positions in the church. In later years, he served a mission at the Church Crop Farm, which he very much enjoyed. He also worked in the babtistry at the Jordan River Temple. He and Claudia served an MLS (Member-Leader Support) mission in their own stake. They are the parents of five children and eighteen grandchildren.
He is survived by his wife, Claudia, children, Richard Wendell Remington (Rachelle), Jonathan Philip Remington, Anne Richardson (Brent), Elizabeth Mills, and Emily Withers (Wayne) grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
