Matthew John Hughes

Matthew John Hughes, known to those who loved him as Matt, passed away on August 29, 2026 after an unexpected heart attack in Murray, Utah. Matt was born in California on January 19, 1963 and spent much of his life facing challenges and struggles that were not always easy.

Matt was a genuinely good man with a big heart, the kind of person who would have given you the shirt right off his back. He cared deeply for the people in his life and formed many lasting friendships with people he met through the VA. To those who knew him, Matt was more than the mistakes he made or the difficulties he faced. He was a friend, a father, a grandfather, a veteran, and a man who was loved.

Matt is survived by his only son, Matthew S. Hughes; his granddaughter, Maddie; his grandsons, Bently and Bosten; and his devoted service dog, Sniper. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Doris Hughes.

Though his life was not always an easy one, Matt left behind people who will remember his kindness, his loyalty, his friendship, and the moments of laughter and connection they shared with him. He was a man who had flaws, faced battles, and made mistakes, but he also had a heart that could give freely and love deeply.

Matt will be missed by his family, his friends, his fellow veterans, and all those whose lives he touched. May he finally find the peace he spent so much of his life searching for.
