Todd Jensen Smith, 59, of Utah, passed away on June 15, 2026, while his wife held his hand until his last breath. Born on February 27, 1967, in Ogden, Utah, Todd lived with severe service-related PTSD for many years. Treatments intended to help him brought additional health challenges, and complications from bariatric surgery ultimately led to liver cirrhosis. Through it all, he remained strong, resilient, and courageous. Todd lived a life defined by service, adventure, faith, and music.
Todd served his country honorably as a Military Police Officer and previously worked in law enforcement and private investigation. During his military career, he participated in multiple deployments, including service during the Iraq and Bosnian wars.
While serving in Iraq as a Military Police Officer, Todd was instrumental in the recovery and transport of Prisoner of War Jessica Lynch during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Todd was recognized as a Warrior Citizen by the United States Army, a high distinction.
Outside of his service, Todd was a gifted guitarist and lifelong lover of music. He spent much of his younger years traveling the country and performing with bands, including appearances at major events such as Milwaukee Metal Fest. He wrote the music for his band, Jezus Rides a Riksha, which they continue to perform to this day.
Music was more than a hobby to Todd—it was part of who he was. Whether discussing a favorite guitarist, a memorable concert, or the latest movie he had watched, his enthusiasm was contagious.
Todd loved adventure. He collected stories the way some people collect souvenirs. Fast cars, motorcycles, camping trips, road trips, live shows, and spontaneous experiences filled his life with motion and excitement. He was never content to simply watch life pass by.
In later years, his faith became an increasingly important part of his life. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Todd found purpose in serving others and participating in temple work. He believed deeply in God, in the importance of protecting others, and in standing for what was right even when it was difficult.
Todd is survived by his wife, Lana Smith; his daughter, Tiffany; his son, Christian Smith; his best friend and war buddy, Dan Delao; many friends and neighbors; and his beloved dog, Cookie.
He was preceded in death by his mother, father, and grandparents.
Those who knew Todd will remember his love of action movies, music, westerns, and spirited conversation. They will remember his warmth, generosity, and willingness to help others. Through faith, service, and love for others, Todd built a legacy that reached far beyond himself. He was truly an American Hero.
